The field research concentrates around the Dyer Island system. The main island is Dyer Island, named after Samson Dyer, one of the first settlers on the island, is a Cape Nature Conservation controled Nature Reserve for around 36 species of Marine Birds.
South of Dyer Island is another smaller island or rock - Geyser Rock, home to a permanent colony of between 40 and 80 thousand Cape Fur Seals.
